Descripción de la obra

Published in conjunction with an exhibition at the Getty Museum, this elegant catalogue is a fitting tribute to a virtuoso sculptor. Born in The Hague, Adriaen de Vries traveled to Florence in the early 1580s and joined the studio of Giambologna, the official sculptor to the Medici dukes. In 1601 De Vries was appointed official court sculptor to Rudolf II in Prague, where he worked until his death.

Although he is known to have modeled sculptures in terracotta and stucco, De Vries worked primarily in bronze and was a superb technician. Some of his best-known works are illustrated and described in this comprehensive volume, including the Bust of Emperor Rudolph II, the fountain Mercury and Cupid, Psyche Born Aloft by Putti, Juggling Man and The Wrestlers.

Accompanying the sixty-six works of art catalogued here are essays by Frits Scholten, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam; Rosemary Mulcahy, professor of art history, University of Dublin; Lars Olof Larsson, University of Kiel, Germany; Görel Cavalli-Björkman, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm; Francesca G. Bewer, Straus Center for Conservation, Harvard University; Uwe Heithorn, University of Kiel, Germany; Thomas Da Costa Kaufmann, Department of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University; and Arjan de Koomen, art historian, Amsterdam.
